Bec...I've been reading USA, a monumental task. Because of the continuous racial slurs I'm concerned that Dos Passos was a racist. But I was born in the '40s and remember hearing many of the expressions such as, "that's white of you." At the same time, I'm disturbed that the N word has been removed from Huckleberry Finn. Those were different times and that should be acknowledged.
